Highlights: Pulcinella and L'heure espagnole

Two operas, one night – what do you say? The revered Opéra Comique offers you two little jewels of lyrical art: Pulcinella composed by Stravinsky in 1919, and L'heure espagnole, composed by Ravel in 1907. Enough to satisfy the appetite of all opera lovers, and even the most scrupulous of listeners...

Pulcinella is a one-act ballet-opera based on works by Pergolesi, revisited and arranged by Stravinsky. The work was premiered in 1920, and combines Baroque music with modern elements. The libretto is inspired by the Italian commedia dell'arte and features the adventures of the character Pulcinella, a Neapolitan seducer. Stravinsky's music is refined and expressive, with lively rhythms and catchy melodies.

L'heure espagnole is a one-act comic opera, created by Ravel in 1911 and is his first contribution to opera. The plot takes place in a clock factory in Spain, wherein the main character, the widower Torquemada, is trying to find a replacement for his assistant. Other characters from the opera (Ramiro, Gonzalve, and Concepción) spice up the story… written in an impressionist style, Ravel's music is colourful and sensual.

Discover two jewels of lyrical art in one fantastic evening…a golden opportunity that is not to be missed!

Story: Pulcinella and L'heure espagnole

Who knew it was so easy to jump from Italy to Spain in just one evening? A continental crusade awaits you in March 2024 at the Opéra Comique, which presents to you a double-feature of two short operas: one by Russian legend Igor Stravinsky, who tells the tale of one Neapolitan seducer – your first stop, Italy! The other opera plunges you into the inner workings of a clock factory in Toledo, Spain, and of the watchmaker within – a creation from the mind of a French great, Maurice Ravel.

In this contemporary take on classical pieces, director Guillaume Gallienne and conductor Louis Langrée combine their immaculate talents to take us on a spectacular journey through these two masterpieces, inspired by the 18th century.

In Pulcinella, Polichinelle (or Pulcinella in Italian) is overwhelmed by a host of adoring girls, all of whom proclaim love for him…in a bid to save his own romance, he must dismiss the jealous women surrounding him.

In L'heure espagnole, the opposite is true for Concepción, wife of the Toledo watchmaker, who is plagued by lovers as disappointing as her husband.

Let the magic of the music work, and allow the splendours of the Salle Favart, otherwise known as the Opéra Comique, to dazzle you!

Place Boieldieu - 75002 Paris

Opéra Comique

If you take a walk in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, you will be delighted to discover in the small, quaint Place Boieldieu, a superb building of beautiful proportions topped by six caryatids: the Opéra Comique, a theatre house in Paris, which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015. You will be surprised to learn that this gold and red auditorium, also known as Salle Favart, is considered the first modern theatre in France because it was the first to be designed with fully electric equipment for both public and stage lighting.

That doesn’t rest as the only surprise… Despite its name, the Opéra Comique doesn’t only perform comic operas, a particular kind of musical show that mixes sung arias with spoken theatre (the ancestor of the musical), but a wide range of operas as well! It was in this venue that works that are now internationally known were created, such as Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Delibes's Lakmé, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande... but also Massenet's Manon and Bizet's Carmen! This hall has welcomed the finest composers and never ceased to welcome works from the contemporary repertoire. Viva la musica! Viva l'opera!
