Highlights: The Misanthrope

From October 3, 2025, to January 3, 2026, the Comédie-Française brings Le Misanthrope back to the stage in Clément Hervieu-Léger’s elegant and rigorous production, originally created in 2014. This revival offers a chance to rediscover one of Molière’s most popular works, as profound as it is strikingly relevant today.

Premiered in 1666, The Misanthrope emerged at a pivotal moment in the reign of Louis XIV, when court life, power, and social conventions weighed heavily on the public conscience. In this context, Molière crafted a verse comedy as serious as it is brilliant, questioning the role of sincerity in a world ruled by appearances. Less farcical than his other plays, it stands as a masterpiece of balance between social satire, moral dilemma, and emotional tension.

Hervieu-Léger’s production, marked by great clarity, allows Molière’s language to shine in all its strength. And this is where one of the show’s greatest achievements lies: the diction—precise, musical, and unmistakably “Comédie-Française”—brought to life by an exceptional troupe. Éric Génovèse, Alain Lenglet, Florence Viala, Loïc Corbery, Serge Bagdassarian, Adeline d’Hermy — to name but a few — deliver the music of the verse with rare precision.

In this clear and taut version, Le Misanthrope reveals all its modernity and richness. A precious opportunity to hear Molière as you’ll hear him nowhere else.

This show is surtitled in English with smart glasses!

Thanks to the “panthea.live” system provided by our sister company Panthea, smart glasses for surtitling are available for The Dance School! While the performance is in French, it is entirely accessible to non-French speakers and hearing-impaired audience members as the smart glasses allow viewers to experience the show with surtitles in English, French, and French Sign Language (LSF). This highly innovative technology is available exclusively by Panthea and Theatre in Paris.

Story: The Misanthrope

In a 17th-century Parisian salon, Alceste, a principled and uncompromising man, can no longer bear the hypocrisy and pretences of society. He rejects flattery, compromise, and social conventions to the point of wanting to sever ties with the world.
Paradoxically, he is in love with Célimène, a young, lively widow who is witty and perfectly at ease in the very world of social games that Alceste despises. Surrounded by suitors, she embodies everything he detests — and yet, he loves her.

They are surrounded by several characters: Philinte, the reasonable friend; Éliante, the discreet cousin; Arsinoé, jealous and moralizing; along with a gallery of vain courtiers and marquises. Romantic conflicts, rivalries, intercepted letters, and scenes of jealousy punctuate this bitter comedy, where Alceste takes his logic to the extreme by wishing to abandon society altogether.

In the end, disillusioned by Célimène and the world alike, he chooses exile. Molière leaves the audience with a dilemma: should one live among others, even at the cost of compromise, or withdraw in order to remain true to one’s principles?

Most famous line from the play: “I want people to be sincere; and as a man of honour, Never utter a word that doesn’t come from the heart.”
This speech, in which Alceste expresses his uncompromising ideal of truth, encapsulates the entire conflict of the play.
