The Bourgeois Gentleman by Molière will be performed at the Théâtre de la Porte Saint‑Martin as part of the Comédie‑Française’s “Hors les murs” (Beyond the Walls) season, during the renovations of the Salle Richelieu.
For this second part of the season, “Beyond the Walls”, the troupe takes to some of Paris’ most iconic theatres, offering the audience exceptional and unprecedented performances. A rare opportunity to (re)discover great classics in unique and prestigious settings, extending the theatrical experience beyond its usual walls.

 

With the Comédie-Française, The Bourgeois Gentleman is reinvented under the gentle — and perfectly orchestrated — madness of Valérie Lesort and Christian Hecq. Their direction, both unrestrained and clockwork-precise, transforms Molière's comedy-ballet into a true theatrical playground. Lesort and Hecq delight in whimsical universes, visual surprises, and improbable transformations: here, everything sparkles, moves, and laughs. Their attention to detail makes every scene flavourful, and their humour, tender yet sharp, makes Monsieur Jourdain's ridiculousness shine with unprecedented brilliance.

 

Guided by this inventive direction, the troupe of the Français throws themselves into the performance with joy. That evening’s Jourdain, masterfully directed, oscillates between awkward grandeur and disarming innocence. Around him, dancing masters, philosophers, and “approximate” nobles whirl in a perfectly oiled comic choreography.

 

Within Molière’s body of work, this play is a satirical gem; in the hands of Lesort and Hecq, it becomes a joyful fireworks display.

Story: The Bourgeois Gentleman

Mr. Jourdain, a wealthy bourgeois but not very clever, dreams of becoming a nobleman… without really understanding what that entails.

 

He surrounds himself with an army of masters — in dance, music, and philosophy — who mostly lead him into ridiculous situations. While he imagines himself a high-ranking marquis, his family desperately tries to bring him back down to earth, and a clever young lover takes advantage of his naivety to arrange his affairs.

 

Between absurd lessons, extravagant costumes, and deflated illusions, The Bourgeois Gentleman is a jubilant comic feast. It’s impossible to leave without smiling: Molière hits the mark, again and again.

In addition to the surtitles, these Augmented Reality glasses can also be connected to a headset for Audio Description as well as display a video with sign language depending on the show. These features not only make performances accessible to a wider audience but also allow for audience members to have a personalized experience in a way that suits them best.
