History and Fun Facts about La Colline National Theatre
La Colline is one of the six national theatres with the Comédie-Française, the Odéon theatre, the Chaillot National Theatre, the Opéra-Comique National Theatre, and the Strasbourg National Theatre. It owes a lot to the work of Guy Rétoré who had directed the Théâtre de l'Est Parisian, ancestor of the La Colline theatre. It is under the impetus of its various directors (Jorge Lavelli, Alain Françon, Stéphane Braunschweig) that the theatre today presents plays by living French or foreign authors with an emphasis on avant-garde compositions. In 2016, Wajdi Mouawad became director of La Colline and focused his work on four main points: youth, territory, creation, and diversity. The architecture of the building (an all-glass facade) is a metaphor for the commitment to opening theatre up to the neighborhood and meeting with all audiences.
