ABOUT

Église Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois

While first founded as far back as the 7th century, the structure of the Saint Germain l'Auxerrois Church we see today was primarily constructed from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Featuring architectural elements in Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque styles, the historic venue served as the primary place of worship for the neighbouring Louvre Palace for many years. This legendary Parisian church has stood the test of time, playing a key role in many historical events. During the 1572 St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, in which thousands of Huguenots were murdered in the Wars of Religion, it was the bells of the Saint Germain l'Auxerrois Church that rang the alarm. The venue also hosted the funerals of celebrated painters such as François de Malherbe (1628), Antoine Coysevox (1720), François Boucher (1770), and Jean-Baptiste Siméon Chardin (1779).

A charming Parisian monument rich in history just steps from the Louvre in the very heart of Paris, the Saint Germain l'Auxerrois Church is often missed on many tourist circuits, a true hidden gem! Centuries later and the church still holds regular services and special events. A concert at the Saint Germain l'Auxerrois Church is a can't-miss opportunity to indulge in a bit of classical music under its vaulted ceiling!
