La fille de Madame Angot at the Opéra Comique
Prolific French poet Paul Verlaine wrote in his memoirs that he could not sleep in prison because of the incessant singing of Lecocq's songs by his fellow inmates. There is surely no greater testament to the unparalleled genius of Lecocq's music than the whimsical torment of another one of history’s most creative minds, representative in itself of the immeasurable impact that La fille de Madame Angot had on its decidedly captivated audience.
La fille de Madame Angot (Madame Angot's Daughter), now revived for the new season at the Opéra Comique, is a comic opera by Charles Lecocq - a legendary French composer who was as well known in the late 19th century under the alias Jacques Offenbach. It tells us the complicated love story between a street singer and a French nobleman. Audiences will find it near impossible to not be charmed by this bewitching operatic love story, which is laced generously with ample doses of comedy as well as romance. Discover all of its jubilant and colourful characters, all of whom belong either to the Sans-Culottes or the Merveilleuses and Incroyables groups. A revolutionary tale for the ages… We'll tell you no more! La fille de Madame Angot will present each of the opera's characters in their most comical light upon the stage of the Opéra Comique from September 2023. Discover the classic French spirit through this joyful opera piece!

Macbeth Underworld at the Opéra Comique
Literature buff? Avid reader? Look no further – this is the show for you! A new release – or, rather, a reimagined classic – comes to the stage of the Opéra Comique this season to posit an alternate ending to one of history's most beloved pieces. Drawing reference from The Bard's most revered play, Macbeth Underworld creates a timeline in which Macbeth never died in his tragic tale. Pascal Dusapin, French contemporary composer, reanimates this ambitious figure for a fascinating operatic adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth, thrusting the titular character along with his audience into a dark and mysterious world, wherein the characters navigate between dream and reality, life and death, and other such frightening dichotomies. Dusapin's excellent command of composition and orchestration creates an atmosphere that oscillates between tension and beauty, power and subtlety. The voices of the talented singers on stage blend seamlessly with the colours of the orchestra, creating a unique and fascinating soundscape. See this unique reimagining as an opera!

L’autre voyage at the Opéra Comique
A superb show awaits you at the Salle Favart, otherwise known as the Opéra Comique… French conductor Raphaël Pichon has concocted a superb tribute to legendary composer Franz Schubert by bringing together some of his forgotten scores – true gems of lyricism and melancholy. This prolific composer would only go on to complete half of his operatic projects, some of which were never performed on stage. L’autre voyage pays tribute to these unfinished scores, scattered through time yet not lacking in rich musical complexity. By calling his show The Other Journey, conductor Raphaël Pichon references Schubert's extraordinary Winterreise (Winter Journey). Pichon aims to take us on a journey filled with extraordinary beauty, appropriately paying homage to texts by Goethe and Heine. This contemporary conductor has called upon exceptional talents to realise this touching dedication: French baritone Stéphane Degout and Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg shine in this ode to some of history's finest classical music, and their unparalleled voices will most certainly do justice to these monumental pieces. A show entirely dedicated to the great Austrian composer… a one-of-a-kind show, to be enjoyed by classical enthusiasts and first-timers alike. Don't miss out!

Pulcinella & L’heure espagnole at the Opéra Comique
Two operas, one night – what do you say? The revered Opéra Comique offers you two jewels of lyrical art: Pulcinella composed by Stravinsky in 1919, and L'heure espagnole, composed by Ravel in 1907. Enough to satisfy the appetite of all opera lovers, and even the most scrupulous of listeners...
Pulcinella is a one-act ballet-opera based on works by Pergolesi, revisited and arranged by Stravinsky. Having first premiered in 1920, this piece artfully combines Baroque music with modern elements. The libretto is inspired by the Italian commedia dell'arte, and features the adventures of the titular character, Pulcinella, a Neapolitan seducer. Stravinsky's music is refined and expressive, with lively rhythms and catchy melodies.
L’heure espagnole, on the other hand, is a one-act comic opera, created by Ravel in 1911 and is his first contribution to opera. The plot takes place in a clock factory in Spain, wherein the main character, the widower Torquemada, is trying to find a replacement for his assistant. Other characters from the opera (Ramiro, Gonzalve, and Concepción) spice up the story… written in an impressionist style, Ravel's music is colourful and sensual.
Discover two jewels of lyrical art in one fantastic evening…a golden opportunity that is not to be passed up!
