Story: Preljocaj's Gravity (Gravité)

Director Angelin Preljocaj has a theory that deals with deifying the laws of nature regarding gravity itself. Gravity is what keeps the dancers on the ground and in order to break free from this empowerment the talented performers must shift to leaps and graceful jumps as well as have great balance in order to defy the concept of weight and speed. Differentiating from other ballet choreography which tell a story, this original piece opens the floor to endless possibilities in the form of research questioning the gravitational pool within the fundamentals of his recent work, Gravity.

Commandité par Louis XV, l’Opéra Royal était l’une des salles de concerts les plus grandes d’Europe au moment de son inauguration en 1770. Aujourd’hui, il est toujours admiré et constitue l’une des plus belles et plus luxueuses scènes de Paris et de ses environs, du fait de son décor éblouissant et ses formes du début du siècle. Le plafond couvrant la salle est d’une magnifique facture, qui n’est pas sans rappeler la célèbre Chapelle Sixtine de Rome.

L’Opéra Royal n’était pas une salle ordinaire : il était apprécié par les élites aisées amatrices de théâtre. D’une capacité de 1 500 personnes, seul un nombre déterminé d’invités pouvait se rendre dans le célèbre château de Versailles pour assister aux meilleurs spectacles. La salle fut plus tard employée comme salle de bal et de banquet.

Après la Révolution française, l’Opéra Royal fut laissé intact bien que dépouillé de ses ornements du XVIIIe siècle. Modifiant son apparence originale, la salle fut rénovée pour accueillir des spectacles officiels comme celui de l’ouverture du musée de Versailles en 1837. Rénovée et inaugurée une fois de plus en 1957, après la Seconde Guerre mondiale sous les ordres de l’architecte André Japy, la salle prit un nouvel aspect. En 2009, l’Opéra Royal ouvrit ses portes aux spectateurs du monde entier et commença à proposer un éventail de spectacles tels que de la danse contemporaine, des ballets, de l’opéra et des concerts de musique classique. Aujourd’hui, l’Opéra Royal accueille plus de 100 représentations par an dans sa salle dorée avec ses sièges en velours rouge et ses lustres ostentatoires.

Where will I be seated?

There are a two categories available. The theatre is an Italian style auditorium, meaning the seats are in a horse-shoe shape.

How do I get to the theatre?

The theatre is accessible by the metro station Gare de Versailles-Château-Rive-Gauche RER C or bus line B and 171 with final stop in Château de Versailles station. What do I do when I get to the theatre?

We invite you to arrive 30 minutes before the beginning of the show and present your voucher at the front desk. If you are staying in the city center of Paris, we advise you prepare your itinerary to Château de Versailles 1 hour and 30 minutes before the beginning of the show considering the location of the palace is distant. The theatre's English-speaking staff members will guide you to your seats. Please note that the performances at the Opéra Royal begin precisely on time, and all late arrivals will not be permitted to enter the auditorium until intermission.

Does the venue have a specific dress code?

For Parisian operas and ballets, the dress tends to be a bit fancier than in other venues, so feel free to have a little fun and dress to impress. Many Parisians will arrive directly from work, dressed in casual chic attire. Generally, elegant casual wear is required, jackets are recommended for men. Shorts, Bermuda shorts, flip-flops, sportswear and trainers are discouraged.

Is it a show for travellers or French people?

Both! The Château de Versailles has been welcoming audiences from all over the world for many years. Preljocaj’s Gravity consists mostly of music numbers and dance, meaning the language barrier for audience members will not be an issue.
