Highlights: Three choreographies by Odile Duboc, Léo Lérus, and Ioannis Mandafounis

What a start to the year at Chaillot National Dance Theatre! On January 8, 9, and 10, 2025, the theatre will host an exceptional evening celebrating three vibrant creations by Odile Duboc, Léo Lérus, and Ioannis Mandafounis, artists who boldly and uniquely explore contemporary dance.

This year, these three pieces, drawn from distinct choreographic universes and movements, are brought to life with freshness and precision by the Choreographic Ensemble of the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris (CNSMDP). Each season, the Choreographic Ensemble of this prestigious school immerses itself in repertoire works, tailor-made creations, touring life, and encounters with major choreographers, thus taking on the appearance of a true company. The troupe is composed of twelve dancers in training, the talents of tomorrow.

The evening begins with Boléro by Odile Duboc, an excerpt from her mythical trilogy. This intimate and sensual reinterpretation of Maurice Ravel's famous music sees bodies organized in counterpoint to the music. In this work, dance becomes an extension of the music, a body in motion that transforms, twists, and expands to the obsessive rhythm of the Boléro. A subtle and collective dance-landscape where sensation takes precedence over demonstration.

Léo Lérus, with his piece Entropie, continues this exploration of movement through a more conceptual proposition. Drawing on Gwo-Ka and Caribbean dances for an intense physicality, bordering on chaos and equilibrium, the piece deconstructs forms and structures in an entanglement of actions. It's a play on temporality and the fragility of bodies, where order allows itself to be destabilized, where every gesture becomes an act of resistance.

Finally, Ioannis Mandafounis, with Join 2, offers a piece where the collective is formed through tension, intensity, and the physical relationship between the dancers. The choreography traverses the space with luminous flashes and brutal silences, composing a group score where individualities rub against the common movement. A beautiful reflection on collaboration and the interconnectedness of bodies in a shared space.

An intense, diverse, and resolutely contemporary program—a concentration of boldness and energy—not to be missed at Chaillot at the start of the year.

History and Fun Facts about Chaillot National Dance Theatre

Picture the scene: you’re on the Trocadero esplanade, facing the Eiffel Tower. Two splendid buildings frame your stunning surroundings – the Palais de Chaillot. In the Palais’ left wing is the current Théâtre national de la Danse, which offers two delightful halls including the Salle Jean Vilar, which can hold 1,200 people and is currently being renovated. It will re-open in September 2026. The other, called the Salle Firmin Gémier, seats 390 spectators. The two halls are accessed by an impressive and majestic staircase leading to the colonnaded foyer.

At the staircase’s cusp, a splendid surprise. The Grand Foyer boasts enormous glass walls that offer a panoramic view of Paris’ iconic Eiffel Tower, as surrounded by the Trocadéro gardens and sublime fountains, not to mention the École Militaire. It’s a truly breathtaking view, the depth of which is rivalled only by that of the building’s long and storied history.
