Highlights: Tristan and Isolde by Saburo Teshigawara and Rihoko Sato

Saburo Teshigawara and Rihoko Sato revisit the Wagnerian myth in their ballet Tristan and Isolde, a silent duet of extreme intensity, where two lovers long for union while remaining irrevocably apart. Acclaimed as a masterpiece since its premiere in 2016, this sixty-minute ballet distills the tragic essence of the opera: absolute love in the face of death, stripped of superfluous narration.

Saburo Teshigawara is responsible for the choreography, lighting and costumes, creating a minimalist visual world: a bare stage, black costumes, and precise lighting that sculpts the bodies, alternating between bluish darkness and sharp brightness.
Gestures become language, shadows embody desire and frustration: the two performers brush past one another, yet never touch, suggesting the perfection of an unattainable love.

A renowned Japanese choreographer, Teshigawara enriches his work with a dialogue between music, space and movement. With Rihoko Sato, his long-time creative partner, he explores the nuances of the couple, confronting emotional tension with the sculptural beauty of their duet.

A sensory and dramatic journey, where the slightest breath, the most subtle gesture, is enough to convey the tragedy of Tristan and Isolde with rare intensity.

Not to be missed at Chaillot – Théâtre national de la danse.
