If you are having trouble speaking French, don't worry. it's not your fault. It's the fault of the French language. Sebastian Marx is a New Yorker that has been living in France for 10 years now, he'll explain why.

This show is playing in riverboat-venue, the only one of its kind, floating atop the beautiful Seine River on the historic left bank!

Why is it "une baguette" and not "un baguette"? What does "ça va" really mean? How can you tell if a French girl likes you? How can you have a good French accent without sounding like a pretentious ass? Luckily, there is an American to explain it all to you.
Why an American? Because whatever the level of shameful French you speak, he's been there. And if he made it through, so can you.

By the end of the show, you probably won't speak better French but at least you'll understand why. Catch Sebastian Marx, the hilarious new comedic talent in Paris, performing in one of the city's most unique theatres, the stage on a riverboat at La Nouvelle Seine, right in the shadow of Notre Dame!

We saw it yesterday, already a fan of his videos it was AWESOME to see him live! I had a great time in a beautiful environment: river-boat with a view of Notre Dame...

La Nouvelle Seine

Péniche sur Berges, en face du 3 quai de Montebello, 75005 Paris

A unique floating theatre in the very heart of Paris! 5 years ago, a team of individuals with varied backgrounds gathered together to create put this unique Parisian venue on the map. La Nouvelle Seine is in fact located on a barge right in the shadow of Notre Dame itself, floating along the banks of the Seine River! Part theatre, part restaurant and bar, this venue is dedicated to one thing: discoveries, whether it be discovering new artistic talents on stage to new culinary experiences. The name itself features a clever play on words, nouvelle scène literally translating to New Scene, featuring all the latest culinary and theatrical talents new to the Paris scene, right on the Seine River!

While the onsite restaurant and bar features a rotating menu of local homemade favorites, the stage always features new upcoming artists, from stand-up comedy to cabaret. Can you think of a better combination than exploring Notre Dame, wandering the Parisian river banks, and heading on in to La Nouvelle Seine to catch a show?

Welcome aboard!

Is the show accessible to English speakers?

Like all our shows, of course! In this case, Sebastian Marx will perform entirely in English, revealing some hilarious secrets of the French language along the way.

How do I get to the theatre?

The Nouvelle Seine is accessible by lines 4, 10, and the RER B, and the closest metro stations are St Michel and Maubert Mutualité. Please note, once you reach the specified address, you will have to head down to the very banks of the Seine River to enter this unique venue right on a riverboat! Our hotline can be reached in case of difficulty finding the theatre weekdays from 10 am to 7pm Paris time. For details, we invite you to consult the map above.

What do I do when I get to the theatre?

We invite you to arrive 15 minutes before the beginning of the show, and present your voucher at the front desk. The theatre's English-speaking staff members will guide you to your seats.

Can I purchase a programme?

Tickets for The French Language Explained by an American do not include a show programme.

It says this show is not recommended for children under 12. What does it mean?

Sebastian Marx is a typical comedian. Officially, he speaks French and English. Unofficially... he loves to play with slang and explicit language to make you laugh,  like the New-York stand-up comedy actor that he is. Get your seatbelts fastened and be prepared to take off...

How long does the show last?

The show lasts exactly one hour.

Is it a show for travellers or French people?

Both! Sebastian Marx is an American living in France for the past 10 years. Over these years he has developed an endless energy to make you laugh, and a lot of jokes about both his American upbringing and his new French life. Parisians, French patrons from the province (i.e. anything French except Paris) and guests from all over the world can see his show and prepare for an evening of laughter!

Is tipping customary?

The Nouvelle Seine is a very small theatre with open seating. It is therefore not expected that you will tip the usher. However, if you feel like rewarding a very nice welcoming host, please note that ushers will usually expect a small tip of between 2€ and 5€, which you can give them when they've shown you to your seat. Fun fact: the French word for “tip” is “pourboire,” which literally translates to “to have a drink.”

Do I have the possibility to eat and/or drink onsite?

This unique theatre on a riverboat also boasts a restaurant and bar, where you are welcome to order food and drink before or after the show. When purchasing your tickets, theatre-goers also have the option to select the category including a glass of champagne, to make you night extra special! If desired, feel free to bring you champagne right into the theatre with you to enjoy during the show.
