HIGHLIGHTS: RIGOLETTO

Audiences from across the world flock to the Paris Opéra every year, and rightly so — this incredible institution certainly knows how to provide lyrical surprises year-through.

As 2024 draws to a close, it brings one of Verdi's most famous operas, Rigoletto, to the stage of the prestigious Opéra Bastille. This moving story, inspired by Victor Hugo's play Le Roi s'amuse, is directed by contemporary talent Claus Guth.

The Opéra Bastille offers to you the unique opportunity to hear Rigoletto's curse, courtesy of Roman Burdenko or Georg Gagnidze; the famous aria “La donna è mobile” sung by the Duke of Mantua will be performed by either Liparit Avetisayan or Dmitry Korchak. The moving aria “Caro nome...”, sung by either Rosa Feola or Slavka Zámečniková, is sure to tug on the heartstrings of spectators, and audiences will rejoice at the admirable vocal quartet in the last act sung by Gilda, Rigoletto, the Duke, and Maddalena (Aude Extrémo or Justina Gryngyté).

This sublime work of surprising musicality will resonate in the auditorium, appropriately immense for the grandiosity of the opera it will house. The character of Rigoletto sings, implores, condemns, and weeps in a production by Claus Huth that tells a story through a series of revealing flashbacks... Temporality takes a back-seat role as Verdi produces an opera guided instead by emotion.

SYNOPSIS OF RIGOLETTO

Rigoletto, an opera in three acts and four scenes by Giuseppe de Verdi, is set in the Italian court of the licentious Duke of Mantua. Rigoletto, his hunchbacked jester, entertains the court, but beneath his jester's costume he is the loving father of the young Gilda, whom he jealously protects. When Rigoletto learns that his daughter has been dishonoured by men of the Court and that she is in love with the Duke, Rigoletto is sworn upon revenge and calls in a hitman. Unbeknownst to him, his actions will cost the life of the person he cherishes the most…

In his daring reinvention of Verdi's opera, German director Claus Guth takes the final scenes of the masterpiece as his starting point. On the stage of the Opéra Bastille, the production opens with the image of Rigoletto crouching in grief over the lifeless body of his daughter, positioning the tragic conclusion of this incredible story at the beginning of the drama. The rest of the libretto comes to us through the sorrowful musings of the hunchback, who looks back with remorse on the events now overshadowed by the enormity of Gilda's death.

A dry eye will be hard to find in the crowd, as the audience is confronted with the grief of a mourning father. Yes, we cry, we cry a lot with Rigoletto, but we are also delighted to hear the famous arias of this lyrical melodrama. A piece that is rich with emotional depth as well as musical excellence.

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Bastille

Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989. For years, many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. Just over 100 years after the inauguration of the Palais Garnier, the demands finally won over the newly-elected President Mitterrand, who supported the project as the headliner among many modern works launched during his term. Selecting the popular Bastille neighbourhood for its ease of accessibility from Paris and the surrounding areas, the old Bastille Train Station was destroyed to make way for the construction of the new venue. The building was completed just in time for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

The venue has undergone many changes in direction resulting from varying political affiliations, and has undergone major renovations since its construction to repair and to soundproof the entire structure. Unlike other auditorium designs, each and every seat at the Opéra Bastille guarantees an unrestricted view of the stage. With its white glass ceiling, crisp gray compliments, and black seating adorned with rich oak, the venue is an ode to modernity and simplistic design. From the exterior, made of blue granite from Brittany and blocks of glass, light is reflected from every corner of this angular venue.
