Highlights: Nixon in China

The Opéra Bastille once again welcomes Nixon in China, John Adams’ hypnotic opera, where politics becomes the raw material for a landmark work.

The production had already left a strong impression in 2023, thanks to Valentina Carrasco’s bold staging, which transcends mere historical reconstruction. She brings a richly symbolic and surreal interpretation to the 1972 diplomatic visit, challenging conventions without betraying the original message. The audience is drawn into a powerful visual fresco that subtly questions the illusions of power and the workings of collective memory.

The cast, worthy of the world’s greatest stages, delivers an exceptional level of performance. Thomas Hampson portrays a Richard Nixon who is both commanding and vulnerable, revealing the American president’s inner turmoil with unsettling intensity. At his side, Renée Fleming, radiant and moving as Pat Nixon, brings a rare humanity to the role, enhanced by a delicate and nuanced vocal line. Joshua Bloom lends Henry Kissinger a cynical and menacing stage presence, while John Matthew Myers embodies a hallucinatory Mao Zedong, whose piercing voice heightens the character’s dreamlike quality.

Under the precise musical direction of Kent Nagano, this production stands out as a highlight of Paris’s operatic season—part political opera, part waking dream.

The staging is full of surprises, but we won’t give any of them away.
An opera that astonishes and leaves a lasting impression!

Story: Nixon in China

Had enough of American politics? The last thing you want to think about is the president? We guarantee that you’ll still find something to love with Nixon in China!

Showing at the Opéra Bastille, Nixon in China is an opera by John Adams, a key figure of the minimalist movement. The score is characterised by its repetitive motifs, hypnotic pulses, and evolving harmonies that convey both the political tension and the historical solemnity of Richard Nixon’s 1972 visit to China. Adams transforms this diplomatic episode into a musical fresco, blending orchestral grandeur with lyrical introspection.

Minimalism, far from being cold or mechanical, here serves to express the psychological complexity of the protagonists and the historic importance of East meets West Adams’s musical language follows the movements of History: martial rhythms for official ceremonies, lyrical arabesques for moments of intimacy or uncertainty. The choruses and orchestral textures evoke at times ideological fervour, at others the human fragility behind political postures.

Several key moments in Nixon in China punctuate John Adams’s hypnotic score. The dramatic arrival of the American president with the aria “News has a kind of mystery” immediately sets a gripping dramatic tension. The second act culminates in “This is prophetic!”, where Pat Nixon, portrayed with grace, marvels at a world she only half understands. The final duet “I am old and cannot sleep” between Nixon and his wife, intimate and suspended in time, offers a poignant meditation on time, memory, and disenchantment. Adams blends restrained lyricism with repetitive pulse, creating a chiaroscuro emotion that lingers long after the curtain falls.

This is a musical interpretation as critical as it is poetic of a diplomatic event transformed into contemporary myth.

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Bastille

Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989. For years, many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. Just over 100 years after the inauguration of the Palais Garnier, the demands finally won over the newly-elected President Mitterrand, who supported the project as the headliner among many modern works launched during his term. Selecting the popular Bastille neighbourhood for its ease of accessibility from Paris and the surrounding areas, the old Bastille Train Station was destroyed to make way for the construction of the new venue. The building was completed just in time for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

The venue has undergone many changes in direction resulting from varying political affiliations, and has undergone major renovations since its construction to repair and to soundproof the entire structure. Unlike other auditorium designs, each and every seat at the Opéra Bastille guarantees an unrestricted view of the stage. With its white glass ceiling, crisp gray compliments, and black seating adorned with rich oak, the venue is an ode to modernity and simplistic design. From the exterior, made of blue granite from Brittany and blocks of glass, light is reflected from every corner of this angular venue.
