Highlights: May B by Maguy Marin

Created in 1981 at the municipal theatre in Angers, May  B by Maguy  Marin marks a turning point in contemporary dance-theatre. Inspired by the works of Samuel Beckett, the piece features ten performers, their faces covered in white clay, dressed in loose tunics, moving with expressionist and ritualistic gestures.

The absence of dialogue in the piece – apart from some onomatopoeia and extracts of “Endgame” – accentuates the evocative power of the body.
Meanwhile the stripped down set, dimmed lighting, pastel faces, and the music of Schubert, Gilles de Binche and Gavin Bryars create a world that is both funereal and funny, tragic and burlesque.

In this ballet choreographed as a collective ritual, the performers successively embody wandering, determination, and communion, offering an emotional journey that constantly changes between discomfort and exaltation.

A pioneer of the “new French dance” movement, Maguy Marin’s May B is a visceral and demanding creation, rooted in the anti-narrative, where the fragility and the resistance of bodies traces a true human odyssey.
May B has managed to keep its shock factor after over 800 performances - a truly evergreen masterpiece, part sombre poetry, part life-saving humour.

This show will be at Chaillot from the 9 to the 12 April 2026 : it is a unique opportunity to rediscover the dramatic and creative energy of Maguy Marin, who is redefining dance theatre.
