HIGHLIGHTS: MANON

Behold — a legitimate titan of the theatrical repertoire. A name synonymous with indulgence, some of history’s greatest singers have sung Manon across the years. An incredibly demanding role, the character of Manon requires being an adept ability to convey real and touching emotions through the art of acting and vocal sublimity.

Jules Massenet's Manon is a romantic comic opera in five acts and an exceptional artistic expression of passionate love. Based on the novel of the same name by Abbé Prévost, the opera tells the story of Manon Lescaut, a seductive and carefree young woman who is torn between her love for the young Chevalier Des Grieux and the temptations of her libertine society life.

Aside from its incredible story, Manon’s score is remarkably exquisite. Massenet uses lyrical melodies and rich harmonies to express the burning passion of love, the tenderness of intimate moments, and the tragedy of impossible choices. Emotional acrobats are promised as Manon’s dilemma reaches palpable boiling points.

The singers' voices are at the heart of the opera’s intrinsic charm, boasting lead roles that require an expressive range and exceptional technical mastery.
The role of Manon, for example, call for a singer capable of navigating gracefully between youthful innocence and sensuality, all the while retaining the character's subtle vulnerability. Famous sopranos such as Nelly Melba, Mary Garden, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Beverly Sills, and Renée Fleming have shone in this iconic role, captivating audiences with their stage charisma and masterful interpretation. For this season, it's up to Nadine Sierra and Amina Edris (who alternate in this demanding role) to portray the beautiful Manon.

The character of Des Grieux also requires a powerful, expressive voice, capable of conveying the fiery passion and deep pain of his love for Manon. Renowned tenors such as Luciano Pavarotti, Roberto Alagna, and Jonas Kaufmann have brought their exceptional talent to the role.
Roberto Alagna will take on the task of assuming this role this year from June 11th to 20th, whilst Benjamin Bernheim will be lending his awe-inspiring vocal capabilities from May 26th to June 6th.

What is it that makes these roles so magical? What it is that so tempts that many great singers to take on these demanding roles?

Be the judge at the stage of the Opéra Bastille — and don't forget to bring a handkerchief…!

SYNOPSIS OF MANON

If you’re unfamiliar with Jules Massenet’s Manon, you’re in for a treat. The beauty and fragility of a tender love is represented with artistic sublimity through this classic piece — hopeless romantics, prepare to fall in love all over again…

This operatic narrative follows the torrid story of Manon Lescaut, a seductive and carefree young woman who is torn between her love for the Chevalier des Grieux and the irresistible temptations of worldly life.

Manon, lured by the promise of wealth and luxury, leaves Des Grieux in the pursuit of libertine pleasures. However, it’s not long before she realises that the life she is leading does not bring the happiness she was looking for. Inevitably, Manon finds herself trapped in a world of excess and superficiality, regretting her lost love amidst her material pleasures. In a vow of loyalty and true love, Des Grieux, for his part, remains faithful to Manon despite the trials and obstacles she has posed. As a certain bard once said, the course of true love never did run smooth…

In a battle between monogamous contentment and societal hi-jinks, Manon is torn between her desire for wealth and her love for Des Grieux. In a moment of clarity, she realises that she cannot live without him. However, their attempt to escape is thwarted, and the perseverance of true love is thrown into question…

We invite you to discover the end of this sublime work on the stage of the Opéra Bastille. Will love triumph over all?

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Bastille

Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989. For years, many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. Just over 100 years after the inauguration of the Palais Garnier, the demands finally won over the newly-elected President Mitterrand, who supported the project as the headliner among many modern works launched during his term. Selecting the popular Bastille neighbourhood for its ease of accessibility from Paris and the surrounding areas, the old Bastille Train Station was destroyed to make way for the construction of the new venue. The building was completed just in time for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

The venue has undergone many changes in direction resulting from varying political affiliations, and has undergone major renovations since its construction to repair and to soundproof the entire structure. Unlike other auditorium designs, each and every seat at the Opéra Bastille guarantees an unrestricted view of the stage. With its white glass ceiling, crisp gray compliments, and black seating adorned with rich oak, the venue is an ode to modernity and simplistic design. From the exterior, made of blue granite from Brittany and blocks of glass, light is reflected from every corner of this angular venue.
