HIGHLIGHTS: DAS RHEINGOLD

The prologue of Richard Wagner’s awe-inspiring tetralogy, Das Rheingold represents the start of a gigantic operatic cycle! The Paris Opéra has plenty of surprises in store for you this 2024-25 season…

The Opéra Bastille invites you to discover Das Rheingold, the first instalment of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, on which he worked for some 30 years. The remaining works that complete this cycle, Die Walküre, Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, will be presented over the following three seasons. The perfect opportunity to return to the Paris Opéra and discover these masterpieces!

The first opera in Richard Wagner's famous triptych Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring Cycle), Das Rheingold was composed between 1851 and 1854. This four-scene prologue lays the foundations for a monumental work that explores the themes of mythology, politics, and philosophy.

Innovative and revolutionary, a colossal score will sweep you away with great waves of ecstatic sound. Wagner introduces new orchestral techniques, such as leitmotiv: a device that associates musical motifs with characters, objects, or ideas, creating a rich and complex sound texture that is instantly recognisable. The opera tackles universal issues such as power, greed, love, and destiny, and also offers a reflection on the cyclical nature of time and history, underlining the notion of eternal return.

On stage you will find Ludovic Tézier as Wotan, Simon O'Neill as Loge, Brian Mulligan as Alberich, Eve-Maud Hubeaux as Fricka, and Marie-Nicole Lemieux as Erda. The production is directed by the excellent Callixto Bieito.

Expect pure moments of ecstasy courtesy of these incredible talents, who certainly do justice to this timeless work!

SYNOPSIS OF DAS RHEINGOLD

With the commencement of Das Rheingold, a mystical adventure begins: the famous quest for the magic ring forged by the dwarf Alberich from the gold of the Rhine River.

The opera begins with the Rhine nymphs guarding the precious gold coveted by the dwarf Alberich. They tempt Alberich into revealing the presence of the gold in the depths of the river, but in order to do this, he must renounce love. Ultimately, Alberich steals the gold and the drama begins, for he who possesses this ring acquires immense power — however, this power comes at a price. The ring also brings about a curse that will lead the owner to his own destruction…

Das Rheingold is much more than just an opera, it is the beginning of an epic journey through mythology and the human soul. Who will prove the strongest — gods, or mortal men?

Make yourself comfortable in your seat at Opéra Bastille and let yourself be carried away by this prologue, which will bring you face to face with the gods and take you on a unique adventure in the history of opera!

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Bastille

Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989. For years, many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. Just over 100 years after the inauguration of the Palais Garnier, the demands finally won over the newly-elected President Mitterrand, who supported the project as the headliner among many modern works launched during his term. Selecting the popular Bastille neighbourhood for its ease of accessibility from Paris and the surrounding areas, the old Bastille Train Station was destroyed to make way for the construction of the new venue. The building was completed just in time for the bicentenary of the French Revolution.

The venue has undergone many changes in direction resulting from varying political affiliations, and has undergone major renovations since its construction to repair and to soundproof the entire structure. Unlike other auditorium designs, each and every seat at the Opéra Bastille guarantees an unrestricted view of the stage. With its white glass ceiling, crisp gray compliments, and black seating adorned with rich oak, the venue is an ode to modernity and simplistic design. From the exterior, made of blue granite from Brittany and blocks of glass, light is reflected from every corner of this angular venue.
