HIGHLIGHTS: LEA DESANDRE RECITAL

There is something about a live performance that changes the way you perceive the world. Allow the melodies to envelop your body and spirit as musical excellence is conducted before your very eyes…
Such an immersive experience is offered to you at the Opéra Comique with this staging of L’Amour du chant, op. 3, as performed by the great French-Italian mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre.

A true lyric revelation at the Victoires de la Musique awards in 2017, Desandre quickly made a name for herself on the international music scene, performing roles on a host of major stages across the globe. Her talents have been lent to roles as varied as Cherubino from The Marriage of Figaro to Dorabella from Così fan tutte — even the classic operatic repertoire’s leading lady, Carmen.

Her repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary music, with a penchant for complex, misunderstood, and tormented heroines of the femme fatale style.
A true ambassador for French baroque music, Desandre is a passionate advocate of the French classic repertoire and continues to contribute to its international renown. Her entrancing voice and captivating stage presence have made her a key figure on today's operatic stage.

Accompanied today by French lutenist Thomas Dunford, Desandre has taken the liberty of plunging audiences into three centuries of French love songs, calling upon the beloved scores of composers such as Marc-Antoine Charpentier and Claude Debussy, as well as contemporary artists such as Françoise Hardy and Barbara.

Marvel at this powerhouse duet, and sit in awe of the vocal excellence Paris has to offer you!

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Comique

If you take a walk in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, you will be delighted to discover in the small, quaint Place Boieldieu, a superb building of beautiful proportions topped by six caryatids: the Opéra Comique, a theatre house in Paris, which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015. You will be surprised to learn that this gold and red auditorium, also known as Salle Favart, is considered the first modern theatre in France because it was the first to be designed with fully electric equipment for both public and stage lighting.

That doesn’t rest as the only surprise… Despite its name, the Opéra Comique doesn’t only perform comic operas, a particular kind of musical show that mixes sung arias with spoken theatre (the ancestor of the musical), but a wide range of operas as well! It was in this venue that works that are now internationally known were created, such as Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Delibes's Lakmé, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande... but also Massenet's Manon and Bizet's Carmen! This hall has welcomed the finest composers and never ceased to welcome works from the contemporary repertoire. Viva la musica! Viva l'opera!
