Highlights: Le Domino noir

Over the centuries, the Opéra Comique has hosted a variety of memorable premieres. Boieldieu's La Dame blanche in 1825, Ambroise Thomas's Mignon in 1866, Bizet's Carmen in 1875, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann in 1881, Delibes's Lakmé in 1883, Massenet's Manon in 1884, and Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande in 1902, amongst others, have all graced its stage for the very first and all-important performance.

Now, the renowned debut of Daniel-François-Esprit Auber’s 1837 operatic sensation, Le Domino noir returns to the stage once again at the Opéra Comique. A comic opera in three acts with a libretto by Eugène Scribe, this humorous work quickly became one of the most popular in the nineteenth-century French repertoire.

Laced with ample charm and liveliness, Auber's music alternates between virtuoso arias and rousing ensembles, the latter of which are particularly remarkable. Through his score, the composer is able to oscillate between evoking dramatic tension and pure comedy through his artful blend of vocal talent and composition.

Beyond its entertainment value, Le Domino noir also explores deeper themes such as love, identity, and social conventions. A light-hearted comic opera that will seduce you more than two centuries after its creation, all audiences will marvel at its catchy melodies and captivating plot.

Such an entrancing tale deserves contemporary talent to do it justice. Let yourself be carried away by the soprano voice of Anne-Catherine Gillet and the tenor voice of Cyrille Dubois, as conducted by the great conductor Louis Langrée. Generations of talent coalesce in this famed auditorium!

It's hard to beat this return to the Opéra Comique — discover this exquisite piece for yourself, in the very seat where spectators first witnessed it nearly 200 years ago!

History and Fun Facts about the Opéra Comique

If you take a walk in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, you will be delighted to discover in the small, quaint Place Boieldieu, a superb building of beautiful proportions topped by six caryatids: the Opéra Comique, a theatre house in Paris, which celebrated its 300th anniversary in 2015. You will be surprised to learn that this gold and red auditorium, also known as Salle Favart, is considered the first modern theatre in France because it was the first to be designed with fully electric equipment for both public and stage lighting.

That doesn’t rest as the only surprise… Despite its name, the Opéra Comique doesn’t only perform comic operas, a particular kind of musical show that mixes sung arias with spoken theatre (the ancestor of the musical), but a wide range of operas as well! It was in this venue that works that are now internationally known were created, such as Berlioz's La Damnation de Faust, Delibes's Lakmé, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande... but also Massenet's Manon and Bizet's Carmen! This hall has welcomed the finest composers and never ceased to welcome works from the contemporary repertoire. Viva la musica! Viva l'opera!
