Highlights: La edad de oro by Israel Galván

If there is one anniversary worth celebrating this autumn, it is undoubtedly that of La edad de oro by Israel Galván, presented at the Théâtre du Rond-Point from 15 to 18 October.

Premiered in 2005, this ballet marked a decisive turning point in the career of the Seville-born dancer, a singular genius of contemporary flamenco. Twenty years after his debut, Galván returns to this foundational work as a vital source, where tradition meets the avant-garde. In La edad de oro, he does not aim to faithfully reproduce the eponymous golden age of flamenco, but rather to summon its spirit with boldness. Through deconstructed, syncopated, and at times even disconcerting movements, he appropriates the flamenco vocabulary to reveal its richness and primal energy.

Accompanied live by guitars and the raw voices of traditional masters, Galván offers an organic dialogue between body and sound, between memory and the present moment. His dance, at times minimal, at others volcanic, shifts from whisper to cry, conjuring ghosts, clarity, and fury within an almost bare stage space.

La edad de oro is not a nostalgic tribute, but a living celebration, imbued with intelligence and fervour. Through this incandescent solo, Israel Galván proves once again that he is truly one of the most radical and inspired choreographers of our time.

A vibrant anniversary, not to be missed under any circumstances.

History and Fun Facts about Théâtre du Rond-Point

If you ever want to feel the pulse of the French theatre scene, the Théâtre du Rond-Point is the place to be! But which roundabout or "rond-point" is it exactly? It's one of the most famous roundabouts in Paris, located near the Champs-Elysées, smaller than the famous Etoile roundabout under the Arc de Triomphe. Since 1981, it has attracted a host of directors from all over the world and a host of people with a passion for theatre. A major venue for contemporary creation since 1991, the Rond-Point does not programme "what people like, but what they don't yet know they like", according to Jean-Michel Ribes, the theatre's former director. Since 2023, Laurence de Magalhaes and Stéphane Ricordel have taken over the reins of this theatre, which is still rooted in contemporary creation and focuses on living authors.
