Story: La Calisto

Would you like to hear Venetian Baroque music in the open air? Or better still, listen to La Calisto while admiring Ursa Major under the open sky?

The Festival d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence invites you to discover Francesco Cavalli's beautiful opera La Calisto at the Théâtre de l'Archevêché.
It's an offer that's hard to resist!

The cast features some of the most promising talents on the operatic stage. The title role of Calisto is played by Lauranne Oliva, while Alex Rosen plays Giove (Jupiter). Giuseppina Bridelli lends her voice to Diana, and Paul-Antoine Bénos-Djian to Endimione. Anna Bonitatibus plays Giunone and L'Eternità, Zachary Wilder is Linfea, and David Portillo plays La Natura, Pane and Furia. Dominic Sedgwick plays Mercurio, Théo Imart Destino, Satirino and Furia, and José Coca Loza Silvano and Furia.

What's more, the production is directed by Dutchwoman Jetske Mijnssen, who will be showing the villainy of a selfish and cruel society caught up in the knot of dangerous liaisons.

The icing on the cake is the musical direction by Sébastien Daucé, head of the Ensemble Correspondances, who specialises in the Baroque repertoire. He will be highlighting the musical richness of this work, considered to be a fascinating example of Venetian Baroque at its height, subtly blending comedy and tragedy.

The stars are aligning: go and see for yourself!

Story: La Calisto

La Calisto, an opera by Francesco Cavalli first performed in 1651, was inspired by Ovid's Metamorphoses.

The story follows the nymph Calisto, a devoted nymph who has pledged chastity as a follower of Diana.. Jupiter, who has fallen under her spell, decides to seduce her by taking on the appearance of Diana. Deceived, Calisto succumbs to his advances, which triggers the fury of Juno, Jupiter's jealous wife.
Meanwhile, Endimione, a shepherd in love with the real Diana, tries to win her love. Diana, though troubled, remains aloof, while other secondary characters, such as Satirino and Linfea, add comic and grotesque touches to the plot.

When Juno discovers her husband's infidelity, she decides to punish Calisto. She turns her into a bear, condemning her to wander alone. But Jupiter, moved by pity, offers her a final salvation: he places her among the stars, making her the constellation of Ursa Major.

This tale blends tragedy and comedy, exploring the desires and illusions of mortals and gods alike. It plays on the ambiguity of identities and the fluidity of desire, while offering a biting satire of divine whims and human passions.

An opera that plunges you into the starry night. What better way to discover it than at the Theâtre de l'Archevêché in Aix-en-Provence.

History and Fun Facts about the Théâtre de l’Archevêché

What do a host of internationally-acclaimed musicians, from the likes of soprano legends Teresa Stich-Randall, Teresa Berganza, Suzanne Danco, Mady Mesplé, Régine Crespin, Sylvia Sass, Graziella Sciutti, Rolando Panerai, Montserrat Caballé, and Marylin Horne, to the great conductors Carlo-Mario Giulini and Hans Rosbaud, composers Yan Maresz, Péter Ëotvös, and François Sarhan, and directors Joël Pommerat and Jorge Lavelli…allhave in common?

It’s the open-air stage in the courtyard of the Ancien Archevêché in Aix-en-Provence, which was transformed into a theatre in 1948 and has since become the emblematic venue of the Aix-en-Provence Opera Festival. Among others, each one of these talented and prolific artists has contributed to make this famous festival shine when summer arrives.

With its grand staircase, its medieval vaults, its 17th century wings, and its characteristically ocher Bibémus stone, the courtyard of the Old Archbishop's Palace is the charming venue where all opera lovers converge in July.
It is here that you will be able to savor the pleasure of the warm summer nights, the murmurs of the spectators, the joyful symphony of instruments, and of course the melodic lyricism of the performance.

An open-air stage where pleasures of the ears and of the eyes converge with hazy summer bliss!
