Highlights: Épique ! (For Yikakou)

Autumn promises to be vibrant at the Théâtre Silvia Monfort with Épique! (for Yikakou), an intense solo by Nadia Beugré, on 7 and 8 November 2025. This creation invites the audience on a “solitary journey to Yikakou”, the choreographer’s vanished birthplace in Côte d’Ivoire, swallowed by the forest and deemed “cursed”.

On stage, Nadia Beugré embodies several powerful female figures: her grandmother Gbahihonon – “the woman who says what she sees” – guardian of knowledge and protector of her community, and Dô-Kamissa, an ageing oracle who transforms into a buffalo to avenge her people.

Through these avatars, she weaves a narrative blending intimate memory with collective mythology, which critics described at the Kunstenfestivaldesarts in Brussels: “a powerful solo, a generous and explosive performance”.

The performance is enriched by live music and singing, delivered by Charlotte Dali and Sali Diabate, who represent the griot (poets, musicians, and storytellers who maintain a tradition of oral history in parts of West Africa) voice of tradition, infusing the stage with ancestral resonance.

The scenography by Jean-Christophe Lanquetin, enhanced by the lighting of Paulin Ouedraogo, evokes a secret, fantastical place, somewhere between Macondo and legendary African kingdoms.

Rooted in Beugré’s artistic journey – already acclaimed for Filles-Pétroles and Prophétique – this work continues her quest to bring invisible female voices to light, turning dance into a rite of memory and healing.

Presented as part of the Festival d’Automne in Paris and co-produced with the Théâtre Silvia Monfort, Épique! (for Yikakou) promises a demanding and deeply moving show, not to be missed by lovers of contemporary dance and polyphonic storytelling.
