Highlights: Don Giovanni at the Royal Opera of Versailles

On any stage, Don Giovanni always seduces 1,003 women, peasants, servants, bourgeois, countesses, baronesses, marquises, and princesses... But the Royal Opera of Versailles offers him a veritable showcase worthy of his seduction. Beneath the gold and chandeliers, come and discover this devil of a man capable of the worst villainies and this sublime opera by Mozart, commissioned by the Prague Opera just after the triumph of The Marriage of Figaro.

Re-exploiting the well-known theme of the Seducer of Seville, already widely present in the theatre since the mid-seventeenth century, Mozart's librettist Da Ponte focuses on the libertinism of Don Juan, perhaps inspired by his friend Casanova, who was present at the premiere in Prague in 1787.

The opera is directed by Marshall Pynkoski, who transports the characters into a dramatic whirlwind, magnificently dressed in Christian Lacroix creations. Canadian bass-baritone Robert Gleadow plays the sensual seducer, while Gaétan Jarry conducts the Opéra Royal Orchestra, Chorus and Ballet. A festival of talent for unique evenings.

Story: Don Giovanni at the Royal Opera of Versailles

Don Giovanni, Mozart's absolute masterpiece, is an absolute must-see under the gilt of the Royal Opera of Versailles! It's a rare opportunity that promises to deliver some thrilling moments.

A drama giocoso in two acts, Don Giovanni embarks us on the tumultuous adventures of a noble libertine and his faithful servant Leporello. Don Giovanni constantly seduces and betrays women, provoking the wrath of their loved ones.
Mozart's music is sublime, with passionate arias and intense ensembles. Confronted with his own arrogance, Don Giovanni is condemned to hell by the Commander, whom he had killed.

The opera ends with a reflection on the nature of sin and justice. 3 hours 20 minutes have passed and it will seem as if time stood still.

The Royal Opera of Versailles

Categorized as one of the largest performance halls in Europe during its inauguration in 1770 requested by Louis XV, it is presently still admired as one of the grand luxurious stages in Paris due to its lavishing décor composed of early-century design. The ceiling above the room comprises an exquisite form of art, something similar to what you would see in the Sistine Chapel in Rome.

Opéra Royal was no ordinary room, it was prestigious among wealthy individuals who fancied theater. Hosting 1,500 people, only a specific number of guests were invited to view the best shows in Paris at the esteemed Versailles palace. Later the room was also used as a ballroom and a banquet hall.

After the revolution the Opéra Royal room was left whole but stripped of its 18th-century embellishment. Altering its original appearance, the room is renovated for official shows such as the opening of the Versailles museum in 1837. Renovated and inaugurated once again in 1957 after the Second World War by orders of architect André Japy, the room undertook a whole new look. In 2009 Opéra Royal opened its doors to spectators from all over the world and began to display an array of enlightened shows such as contemporary dance, ballet recitals, opera, and classical music concerts. Presently it offers more than 100 performances per season in its golden room occupied with ostentatious chandeliers, surrounded by red velvet seating.
