But who was this famous Silvia Monfort, after whom a theatre was named?
Not surprisingly, she was a great French actress who was born in Paris in 1923 and died in 1991. She was a member of the French Resistance, an actress, a novelist, a director and a theatre director. Silvia Monfort was one of the greatest interpreters of Racine's Phèdre.
The theatre that bears her name, the Théâtre Silvia Monfort, built in the heart of Georges Brassens Park, is now a genuine cultural venue with a rich and varied programme, resolutely oriented towards new authors and theatrical forms. Fans of both French and international theatre come here to discover directorial nuggets, visual shows and plays created by companies from all over the world. Originally set up in the Marais under the name Carré Thorigny, the Théâtre Silvia Monfort as we know it today moved into the former abattoirs of Vaugirard in 1979.
