Highlights: Brahms’ A German Requiem at the Saint-Eustache Church

Under the majestic vaults of the Church of Saint-Eustache, one of the most moving masterpieces of the Romantic era will come to life: A German Requiem by Johannes Brahms. This exceptional concert promises an experience both grand and intimate, magnified by the power of the organ and the solemnity of the timpani, whose resonances will fill the incomparable acoustics of this iconic venue.

Unlike traditional liturgical requiems, Brahms did not compose a mass for the dead but a profoundly human work. A German Requiem stands out for its universal message of consolation: rather than praying for the souls of the departed, it speaks to the living, offering comfort and serenity in the face of loss. By choosing biblical texts in German, Brahms broke away from the Latin tradition to favour direct understanding of the message, rooting his music in an inner, non-dogmatic spirituality.

In this performance at Saint-Eustache Church, the organ will replace the orchestra with striking intensity, revealing the harmonic depth and tenderness of the work. The timpani will punctuate the musical discourse with solemn beats, while the voices will rise toward the light.

Between contemplation and exaltation, this concert promises a rare moment where music becomes prayer, where every note seems suspended between earth and sky. A must-see event for all lovers of beauty and genuine emotion.

No need to understand German to appreciate the beauty of this work. It is meant for all those who are sensitive to music.

History and Fun Facts about Saint-Eustache Church

What do Scaramouche, the Italian commedia dell'arte actor, Vincent Voiture, the French poet and prose writer, Jean-Baptiste Colbert, the French statesman, Marivaux, the great writer, AND Jean-Philippe Rameau, the famous baroque composer, have in common? All these art lovers and theatre enthusiasts are buried in the church of Saint-Eustache, which stands proudly in the heart of Paris in the Halles district. Richelieu, Molière and Madame de Pompadour were all baptised here. Without a doubt the church impresses the visitor by the height of its nave which culminates at 33 meters, higher than that of the cathedral Notre-Dame de Paris which is only 29 meters. Standing proudly, the Saint-Eustache church. It is one of the most visited churches of Paris. Tourists, Parisians, French, and all who love monuments, history, and art, come to admire the many masterpieces it contains such as Simon Vouet's Martyrdom of Saint-Eustache, the stained-glass windows in the choir, Colbert's tomb, the monumental work bench, the superb pulpit, the stained-glass window in the Calvary chapel, and that of the Virgin. Still continuing today as a place of worship, the church is the venue for numerous classical music concerts, of which we are excited to introduce you to!
