What are surtitles and smart surtitling glasses?
Surtitles, also known as supertitles, are the equivalent of subtitles for live performances! Surtitles are projected text, usually translations, during live performances like operas or plays. They help audiences understand the dialogue or lyrics, particularly in foreign language productions.
Surtitles enhance accessibility by providing a translation or summary of the text being performed, allowing audiences to follow the story even if they don't understand the language. Unlike film subtitles, which are typically placed at the bottom of the screen, surtitles are projected above or to the side of the stage. Surtitles can be projected on a screen, through an LED screen, phones, tablets or on smart surtitling glasses.
*Surtitles (also called supertitles) are the theatre equivalent of subtitles. Funfact: In French “sur” means “above”.
Smart surtitling glasses, also known as ‘AR glasses,’ are smart glasses equipped with a new accessibility solution developed by Panthea that allows surtitles to be displayed in a spectator's field of vision during a performance. In addition to these surtitles, these augmented reality glasses can also be connected to a headset for audio description and display a video in sign language depending on the performance and the venue. These features not only make performances more accessible to a wider audience, but also allow viewers to enjoy a personalised experience.
Shows available with the smart surtitling glasses in Paris
Panthea’s accessibility solution on smart surtitling glasses are available for certain Comédie-Française plays in the Salle Richelieu and will soon be available in all theatres hosting Comédie-Française productions during the next season, starting in January 2026.
The glasses are also available in several partner theatres with Panthea in Paris, France and internationally!

- Une mouette (A mouette), a reimagination of Chekhov’s classic at the Comédie-Française
In her staging of Une mouette at the Comédie-Française, Elsa Granat sought to capture the essence of the characters’ yearning for recognition and love. She modernises the setting without betraying the spirit of the play, exploring the complex relationships between artists and their environment. Elsa Granat transforms the work into a profound reflection on art, suffering, and the lack of communication, choosing to breathe new energy into the human relationships that unfold. Timeless Chekhov!
