Who is behind Theatre in Paris?

Theatre in Paris was founded by 3 French nationals of very different backgrounds, each lending their own expertise and all with the same passion for theatre. Carl de Poncins started his career as an engineer, Christophe Plotard as a journalist, and Romain Beytout as an opera singer. After one day wishing to bring an Australian friend to see a show in Paris and realising the lack of options, the trio joined forces with a small team of Berlin theatre surtitling experts to offer accessible performances in playhouses all over Paris, Europe's most visited city. Theatre in Paris is an international team comprised of French, American, Canadian, and German nationals.

While we have a few shows that run year-round, typical Parisian shows play for a single season, so we generally recommend waiting to reserve until the season you plan to be in Paris to ensure you have the full show variety to choose from.

Language & accessibility

Theatre in Paris promises all shows are accessible to English speakers, what does that mean?

The mission of Theatre in Paris is to bring French theatre to international audiences, and our commitment is to be your theatre box office for all the language barrier free shows in the city. Our shows are carefully selected to be 100% accessible and understandable for English speakers. We ensure this in a variety of ways: French shows with live English surtitles, shows entirely in English, and some shows with no dialogue at all. We take the worries of speaking French out of the equation, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

Will they speak English at the theatre?

Yes, we ensure each of our partner theatres has English-speaking staff onsite, for a smooth journey language barrier free every step of the way.

What are surtitles?

‘Surtitles’ are the projection of the translation, or the script of the play, above the stage onto a screen. They allow for (in our case) total understanding of a foreign language play, or otherwise to enable the deaf and hard of hearing to understand a performance. We have a dedicated team of surtitlers who project the text in perfect synchronisation with the play all in real time. Amazing, isn't it?

Where will the surtitles be located?

The surtitles are projected on a screen located either directly above the stage or on either side of the stage in synchronisation with the performance. When you buy your tickets through Theatre in Paris, we guarantee seats with an optimal view of both the surtitles and the action of the stage.

What language(s) will the surtitles be in?

For all the subtitled shows on our website, English is the only language currently available. However, we would like to incorporate more languages into our service, so stay tuned!

Do I need to speak French to understand the shows?

Not at all! We are bringing you the best of French theatre alongside the locals, all language barrier free. Shows in French benefit from English surtitles, while some shows are entirely in English and others have no dialogue at all!

Tips are not mandatory in Parisian theatres. However, ushers will usually expect a small tip of between 2€ and 5€, which you can give them when they've shown you to your seat. Please note that this tip is not for Theatre in Paris but rather for each individual usher. Fun fact: the French word for “tip” is “pourboire,” which literally translates to “to have a drink.”

Upon arrival at the theatre, you will need to present the voucher sent along with your order confirmation. You can select to either print out this voucher, or simply show it on your smartphone, entirely up to you!

We always recommend arriving about 15 minutes before the performance start time in order to receive your tickets and be seated. Should for whatever reason you need to leave the performance early, please simply do so discreetly so as not to disturb the other audience members or performers.

Here's a list of the best places for drinks and a meal around our theatres!

How do the locals dress for the theatre in Paris?

The typical Parisian will dress casual chic for a night at the theatre, nothing too fancy. Many people come directly from work and are simply dressed to transition from day to night. Please note for that for the Parisian cabarets, the dress tends to be a bit fancier than in other venues, so feel free to have a little fun and dress to impress.

Some of our more historic theatres still include their original seating and decor to ensure an authentic experience.
