Need relaxation in Paris?

You’ve had a bad day at work, life isn’t going your way at the moment, you feel overwhelmed with so many rude people on the metro, you got some bad news today, a heated argument arose. The bottom line is, everyone has a bad day or maybe a few bad days, but it doesn’t matter what type of stress you are facing, because Theatre in Paris has compiled a run-down of the best places to visit in Paris in order to help you feel less anxious.

yoga

Yoga for the body, mind and soul

The best way to help your body and mind relieve stress is through exercise, and the best form of exercise when you’re feeling anxious is yoga. People think of yoga as an activity for balance and flexibility, but yoga also generates relaxation through its positions, and it improves breathing mindfulness. It seems to be the most natural method to treat stress and depression.

YogainParis is the perfect place to get your daily dose of movement-based anxiety treatment, offering group and private classes, and having the option to follow along in English. The classes are accommodated for everyone of all fitness and flexibility levels, meaning there is no reason not to try it out. So, if you’re up for a little stretch, we recommend trying out a class from YogainParis, and seeing the immediate benefits for yourself.

Break whatever you want without consequences

Fury Room has a very unique concept that originates from Japan: if you feel the need to release some steam after a big argument or out of frustration, then this crazy yet effective approach will make you feel a lot better. What is the big deal behind the idea? Glad you asked! Fury Room allows you to have fun and lash out by breaking anything in the room. Have you ever had that feeling that you need to punch a wall? This is what this company offers - the opportunity to smash something without any consequences at all. All you need to do is to put on Fury Room’s protective clothing, and prepare to take a baseball bat to some glass bottles, or even an entire flat including the television and the furniture. The prices start from €10 depending on how many things you are looking to demolish, so there is a package available for any frustration level. This modern-day therapy will help you forget about the stressful situations you're experiencing in the city of Paris.

classical concert

Listen to peaceful music – this always helps

What’s the greatest tonic for remaining calm when you’re stressed? Listening to professional artists playing the sounds of famous composers such as Mozart or Bach on the strings; soothing music always helps the soul. Luckily, there are several classical concerts currently showing in Paris.

Firstly, you can catch a concert in Paris’s most iconic monument, the Eiffel Tower, as part of their Exceptional Concert Series.

Otherwise, seeing as blue is known to be the most calming color, why not attend a concert at the Sainte-Chapelle, and feel your soul relax under the hue of the breathtaking blue stained-glass. You’ll feel serenity running through your veins as you take in the sounds of the choir, orchestra, or soloists on display. Further your calm by adding a wine and dinner add-on to your ticket, so you don’t even need to worry about washing up!

st. martin canal paris

Grab some wine and head to the Saint-Martin Canal

Everyone has heard of the Seine river, but there is another less crowded body of water in the city of Paris: the St. Martin canal. Being near a body of water has been proven to drastically reduce anxiety, due to the sensory experience of the sound of the waves, and the way that focusing on the dynamic movement centres your concentration. Plus, a trip to the Saint-Martin canal has the benefit of distancing you from the obnoxious city-slickers. Grab a bottle of wine from the nearest supermarket - or wine cellar, if you really want to feel your inner calm(!), and head to the canal to sit by the water’s edge, and sip from your cup. You can also take a stroll along the banks, and pop into the multiple shops and bars, including the Comptoir général, which is known for its unusual, African-inspired decor. Head there on a weeknight, when it’s less crowded, and treat your body to some hearty food and drink from the Comptoir’s menu.

massage

Don’t break your piggy bank for a massage

Only permitting the entrance of women, the Hammam at the mosque of Paris (the website is only in French) offers the best relaxing massages in the city that will not cost you an arm and a leg. This is the closest thing you can get in Paris to the original hammams of Morocco, and allows you access to steam rooms, baths, treatments, waxes, and massages, starting from €13. For €2 you can also have a cup of traditional mint tea. P.S. Make sure to take your own flip-flops unless you are looking to pay for the full package!

For a unisex spa, head over to Lanqi Spa Paris, which offers traditional and other relaxing procedures such as facials, scrubs, and wraps - the spa’s ancient chinese techniques have been praised in Cosmopolitan and Marie France, so it must be good! With prices starting at €38 for 30 minutes, it’s a self-care package not to turn your nose up at! Lanqi Spa’s goal is to take care of your well-being, and a relaxing massage is all you need to loosen those tense knots caused by stress.

petting a cat

Pet some cats while sipping on coffee

Turns out it’s not just a myth that petting animals can reduce your stress - a recent study found that university students who’d spent 10 minutes petting a cat had a notable decrease in their cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone. Le Café Des Chats was way ahead of the curve with this relaxation method, opening their first branch in 2013, their ethos being to share the love between people and animals (and coffee). All their cats are rescues who have been fully vaccinated, and before you ask, no, you cannot smuggle them home in your bag…

woman laughing

Have a therapeutic laugh!

If you’re looking for a laugh to relieve your pent-up stress, there are a handful of hilarious shows currently playing in Paris, including Oh My God She’s Parisian, and How to Become a Parisian in One Hour.

Julie Collas’s hit one-woman show, Oh My God She’s Parisian has had audience members leaving the theatre with their smiles stretching from ear-to-ear. Join this native Parisienne, as she talks tourists, expats, and wannabe-parisians through her most hilarious observations on life in the sparkling capital.

Oliver Giraud has been a critical, commercial, and public success in his one-man-show, How to Become a Parisian in One Hour. His quick wit, charisma, and side-splitting humour has dazzled more than 800,000 audience members across the globe! And what’s more, both of these fantastic shows are in English!

free hugs

Get a free hug

Every once in a while, we all need a hug. It may be the case that you’re only visiting Paris briefly, or that you’ve relocated, or that you’re halfway round the world from your family and friends, so, if you can’t get access hug from those closest to you just at the minute, join the Facebook group, Free Hugs Paris, and find out where you can meet the volunteers for a cuddle. It’s been proven that hugging more frequently helps to reduce your blood pressure, so not only will you be less stressed, but you’ll also be more likely to live longer! This group also promotes several charities as part of their mission, including animal welfare associations, and have helped increase the number of adoptions of rescue animals. How about that for calming: cuddling for a cause!
