ABOUT

History and Fun Facts about the Sainte-Radegonde de Giverny Church

In this sacred space, you can forget everything. You're 75 km from the hustle and bustle of Paris’s busy streets, and a long way away from the roar of the inner-city traffic. You're in Normandy now, and it’s time to relax and reflect.

Even if you’ve never heard of Giverny before, you’re sure to have seen it in the famous paintings of France’s most beloved Impressionist artist, Claude Monet. Giverny is the village where you'll find his home and gardens, including the iconic aquatic scene depicted in his much-adored “Water Lilies” piece. Abundant plants and gentle colours cultivate an environment conducive to reflection, de-escalation, and peace — the very foundations of the Impressionist movement, of which Monet was a pioneer. As a testament to his love for this gorgeous village, you can also find his grave here, in the gentle shadow of the Sainte-Radegonde Church.

The Sainte-Radegonde Church is of Romanesque origin, complete with a nave that has preserved a small semicircular bay from this period. The choir has a semicircular apse with an accompanying semicircular vault; beyond this, the rest of the building was constructed in the 15th century. Beyond its doors, the church’s interior boasts some remarkable furnishings, including fine stone statues: a 15th-century Virgin and Child, Sainte Radegonde (St. Radegund) herself, Saint Roch, Saint Quentin, Saint Louis d'Anjou, Bishop of Toulouse, and fragments of 16th-century polychrome stained-glass. It also boasts a fine collection of murals that you are welcome to browse and discover for yourself during your visit.

This divinely beautiful edifice is also the venue for a selection of classical music concerts. These classical concerts are a fantastic way of extending your visit to Giverny through of music — after all, anyone who has visited this charming village will understand why many will want to stay that bit longer. Drink in the charm of this pretty little village that served as the muse for one of history’s finest painters.
