ABOUT

History and Fun Facts about the Gardens of the Château de Versailles

830 hectares, around 200,000 trees, 210,000 flowers planted each year, 55 fountains, 620 water fountains, 35 kilometers of canalisation. These figures can make you dizzy they’re so large and impressive! The gardens of the Château de Versailles are a true masterpiece forged by the hands of André Le Nôtre, Louis XIV’s first gardener, and then by those of Jules Hardouin-Mansart from 1676. Today, the garden is classified as a Unesco World Heritage Site and bears the label Jardin Remarquable, and visitors come from all over the world to discover the famous gardens "à la française". This characteristic garden has trimmings and amenities, an expression of true classicism in the art of gardening. Come and admire this beautiful garden!

The greatest innovation of the French garden is the adoption of a layout structured around a grand central perspective. Its main characteristics include the geometry of its structure, the presence of a raised terrace that makes you want to sit and reflect on all of its surroundings; a perspective from the beautiful flats, fountains, and breathtaking water mirrors. Everything about this place embodies pleasure and discovery.

The fountains are adorned with sculptures that pour out water, and the groves provide small resting spaces decorated with marble statues. You will never tire of admiring the Bassin de Latone, the Bassin du Char d’Apollon, the Bosquet de la Salle de bal, the Bosquet de l’Encelade, the Bosquet des trois fontaines, the Miroir d’eau... and you will wonder if you are walking in the footsteps of the Roi Soleil and his courtiers. An exceptional garden requires an exceptional walk!
