The fun isn’t over yet, it has just begun. It’s time to live it up! A new year means it’s time for new events and traditions around the whole city. Winter has commenced, the nights are longer, and holidays are over but there’s still plenty to do. The magic is not over, the lights in the streets of Champs-Élysées will still be up, some ice-skating rinks will be available until the end of January, special exhibitions such as Toulouse Lautrec, Charlie Chaplin, and Leonardo Da Vinci will still be around. Below are a couple of our favorite top picks of the latest events happening this January 2020.
Fashion week and winter sales
France has two important seasons for low mark-ups on prices for almost all shopping centers, summer, and winter. All you need to know is that winter sales begin the second week of January, so get ready for 4 weeks filled with big discounts. You’ll notice most of the stores you pass by will have on their window display big banners promoting sales from 30- 70% discounts. If you’re looking to buy new outfits now is a perfect time! Literally perfect timing because Fashion week is also starting yet again this January. Big names in fashion will be revealed for the summer lines. Though catwalks are only exhibited to people who have been invited, you might get a peek of the new collection in open-air somewhere in Paris. Last year some models displayed the new collections around the Pyramids by the Louvre museum.
Chinese New Year (13th arrondissement)
2020 is the year of the rat and Nongli Xinnian which is the Chinese New Year is a very important festivity in the Asian culture and it’s coming to Paris. Located on various parts of the 13th arrondissement there will be a colorful parade consisting of:
- Illuminated Chinese lanterns
- Traditional songs
- Dragon dance
- Traditional food
- Martial arts performance
Grand Prix d’Amerique
The anticipation for the world’s best trotting race has ended! Grand Prix d’Amerique promise to exhibit an impressive 2700-meter race on January 26 celebrating its 100th anniversary. A celebrated sport, some of the most prominent audience members will be attending the event. It is expected to host 40,000 spectators and the race will be broadcasted in 35 countries. The prestigious race will be one for the books and it could be something intriguing to witness.
Sunset Sunside Jazz Club
There are all-new programs being presented this month in the very popular jazz joint in Paris, Sunset Sunside jazz club. Get up close and personal with the live jazz band on stage and dance the night away to trendy tunes of either electro-jazz or the classics. Staying cozy during this winter has never been easier. Head over to Sunset Sunside’s ground floor or head down to their basement for a change in scenery and music. The club offers an array of programs worth attending and a lively atmosphere.
If you’re not too shy to get up in front of a crowd and sing to some of the hits from the 80s, 90s, and 00s then you will love Karaokéké locate in the intimate bar Supersonic. Karaokéké is a karaoke party happening on January 9 at 11 pm and many will be attending to join the fun. If you’re not a fan of singing you can still enjoy the show and watch other people singing to the beat of Britney Spears or Celine Dion. Have a blast from the past alone or with friends, either way, it will be one great experience. The list of songs to choose from include:

Funny Girl, A Broadway Hit Musical
Funny Girl a Broadway Hit classic musical based on the true story of Fanny Brice is now being displayed in Théâtre Marigny, conveniently located in the famed Champs-Élysées. 100% in English and subtitled in French, this show is noteworthy. It’s been getting a lot of recognition especially from the New York Times and fans who say it’s undoubtfully hilarious and charming. The movie which is where the play originated from was nominated for multiple Tony Awards especially because of Barbra Streisand who played the main role. Currently, Christina Bianco playing Fanny is stealing the hearts of many with her incredible acting skills and harmonious voice. If you are up for a laugh book your tickets soon.
Free suturing class
Have any wear or tear on one of your favorite outfits? On January 3rd The Textilerie will have a workshop to teach you ho to suture any clothing item, the perfect occasion to learn an extra skill and not have to pay a tailor for minor fixtures. Did we mention this class is free? A teacher will be helping you with any repair problem you might have, whether it being sewing a button back on your shirt, to repairing the zipper on your pants. There will be several dates you can attend the workshop, but the first one starts on January 3 from 3 pm until 6 pm. Registration for this event is highly recommended.
Paris by Night Run
The first Paris by Night run begins on January 11! Individuals are welcome to join hundreds of locals in a pleasant night run, which is not a race just a fun way to meet new people and get a workout. The run can be as long as you want it to be from 8 km to 25 km, you have the opportunity to run all night until the sun rises. Paris by Night will begin at 10 pm in front of the Grande Arche in La Defense and will end in the perfect spot to watch the sun come up in Mont Valérien. This could be the perfect time to discover new or hidden places you’ve never seen before while also enjoying the view of iconic monuments during the night, without a swarm of people around.
Watch a theatre play through smartglasses
If English is not your strongest language and neither is French then we’ve got just the play for you, Successful Strategies. This is one of the very few plays which includes smart glasses with your ticket if you choose this option that is. The smart glasses allow you to read the translated subtitles directly displayed on the lenses from the play in your own language and directly displayed on the lenses meaning you can sit in any row you wish to sit in. Successful Strategies is a must-see, with a dark-humored storyline about a malicious plan that knows no limits. How far would you go to win back the one you love?
Free krav maga course
Discover Krav Maga through a free course on January 7th in the Krav Maga Factory in the 12th arrondissement. The self-defense class can be the perfect workout while learning some swift ways in how to quickly react towards an attack in any unprecedented situation. It is known that Krav Maga can boost confidence and if it’s a trial class, why not try it out?
The Cheese Room
An exquisite idea has emerged and is entirely related to the French culture, The Cheese Geek is a restaurant completely dedicated to cheese tasting and will have a cheese tasting event on January 2nd, the day after New Year. During the cheese tasting, you will obtain different samples of delicious cheese and learn how to differentiate each one of them by taste and texture like a true French expert. Each person will also be provided with 4 drinks including wine. There will also be some entertaining group games plus it’s an event you can enjoy with friends or family, all you would need to do is reserve your seat.
The World of Jaleya- an out of the ordinary circus
The circus is in town, but not for long. A concept similar to that of Cirque du Soleil but with a French twist. An out of the ordinary experience for some family-friendly fun. The World of Jaleya is a contemporary circus that consists only of trained professionals performing acrobatic acts and other stunts thanks to special effects. No clowns or animals. The storyline in the show will also take you on a journey to an unknown world where you will follow Oliver who is looking to find his way back home.
Galette des Rois
Some countries may celebrate the beginning of the year with grapes, champagne, noodles, and other traditional food, but the French welcome the new year with galette des rois. It is said that galette des rois is a cake fit for kings, it is a tart made with butter and ground almonds. A good way to say goodbye to the New Year diet. The delicious tart can be found in many boulangeries around Paris, so keep a lookout to taste a traditional French dessert.
