Situated in the 14th arrondissement, just a stone's throw away from the trendy Saint-Germain dès Près and the beautiful Jardins de Luxembourg, the Théâtre de la Gaîté-Montparnasse is a listed historical monument. It originally opened its doors in 1868 as a ‘café-concert,’ a place where people would go to eat, drink and watch a show, typically mime, dance or cabaret. The 1930s represent a bleak period in the venue’s history, due to the decline in popularity of café-concert culture. The venue fell into disarray, but was thankfully restored in 1958. Threatened again in 1988, this time more seriously with demolition, various influential names in the theatre world rallied round to save it, and it’s been in continuous operation since.
